Work permits

Post-graduation work permit (PGWP)

Regulated consultant, RCIC R520189

The post-graduation work permit (PGWP) is an open work permit issued by IRCC to certain graduates of an eligible designated learning institution, subject to the conditions in force.

Processing time

About 3 to 6 months, depending on IRCC processing volume.

Estimate only, based on times typically observed with IRCC or MIFI. Times vary by visa office, application volume and file complexity. They are not a guarantee.

The post-graduation work permit (PGWP) allows certain graduates of an eligible designated learning institution to gain work experience in Canada after completing their studies.

Eligibility depends on the program completed, the institution, the length of studies, status during studies and, where applicable, the language requirements published by IRCC. The application generally must be submitted within 180 days of written confirmation that the program was completed.

Canadian work experience may later support a permanent residence application (Express Entry or Quebec programs), depending on the profile. It does not guarantee a particular outcome.
